Additional Information on Hunter Army Air Field and Fort Stewart, Georgia
Hunter Army Airfield, located on the east side of Savannah, Georgia continued to be used by the Air Force force approaches. It became a problem when there were many helicopters in the traffic pattern when a B-52 would make a low approach.
The advance party of the Army arrived on base
sometime in mid 1966 and had formulated
a plan for training facilities construction and a training program.
Cobra training was also conducted at Hunter AAf.
Do you remember the large sign at the end of a
taxiway?
"THIS IS NOT THE ACTIVE RUNWAY"
It has been told that a B-52 had landed on the
taxiway after breaking out of weather slightly off centerline of the main runway. For a
time the aircrews were reminded of the incident by
a large sign placed a the end of the taxiway.
When the Army developed the
corridors for training aircraft to leave or enter the Hunter pattern, there was an
unavoidable crossing point of instrument aircraft and Cobras headed for the ranges at
Steward. The SOP provided for altitude separation.
