The Army National Guard

Each state, as required by the U.S. Constitution, must have an active militia. Most states no longer have active militia units. The National Guard has replaced the militia in a sense and yet a state can still have an active militia, even if it does have a Federal National Guard unit. The militia is the citizen soldiers.
The National Guard (commonly called the Minute Men) provides that state with a ready group of men and women to support the needs of those who have suffered through emergencies. Some emergencies are floods, strikes, forest fires, earthquakes and many others. The Guard is there to provide medical assistance, food, shelter, protection and moral support to those in need. The National Guard, both the Army and Air Force, is trained to respond to national emergencies as well, such as Desert Storm, Granada, Panama, Viet Nam, Korea, World War II, World War I, The Civil War, Revolutionary War and many more.
Without these men and women, we would be far worse off. We would not have anyone else to turn to for help in time of emergencies. We would have help to defend ourselves from power-hungry tyrants. We also would not have the freedoms we have today. You would not be reading this today if not for those who have gone before and given their lives and souls to help provide this for us.
Our thanks and appreciation go to the men, women and children who have died in the name of freedom, world-wide, from the beginning of time and to those who serve to defend us each day of our lives. There is still a violent threat to our lives and freedoms, and we can help defend our nation by supporting those who do defend with their lives.
